St Gabriel’s Celebrates Four Finalists in the ‘Why I Love Science’ Competition

We are delighted to announce that four St Gabriel’s pupils—Alex C (Year 8), Henry CS (Year 7), Henry C (Year 7) and Jesse B (Year 7)—were selected as finalists in this year’s Why I Love Science competition, hosted by the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at Harwell on Tuesday 9 December.
Their success is a wonderful achievement in a competition that attracts entries from talented young scientists across the region.
As finalists, each pupil was tasked with creating a two-minute video exploring their passion for science, and the creativity on display was exceptional.
Alex C delivered a hugely entertaining and imaginative presentation, dressing up as each of his science teachers to showcase what he loves about Biology, Chemistry and Physics—complete with a dramatic chemistry experiment involving an aluminium can!
Henry CS shared his fascination with rollercoasters, explaining how science makes it possible to design and build things that once felt impossible.
Henry C explored the science of sound, creating an engaging video on how the structure of the ear enables us to hear.
Jesse B presented a heartfelt and insightful video on Space Science, drawing inspiration from his visit to the Kennedy Space Center. He explained not only the wonders of space exploration but also the vital contributions it makes to medical research, disease understanding, climate science and natural-disaster detection.
At the awards evening, hosted at the Rutherford Laboratories, all the finalists’ videos were showcased to families, staff and scientists from across the site. We are thrilled to share that Alex and Jesse were named runners-up, a fantastic recognition of their creativity, scientific curiosity and hard work.
A huge well done to Alex, Henry CS, Henry C and Jesse for representing St Gabriel’s so brilliantly. Their enthusiasm is a credit to themselves and to our dedicated Science Department, whose support helps nurture a love of science throughout our school.
We are incredibly proud of all four finalists and look forward to seeing where their curiosity and passion will take them next!
