A Beautiful Evening of Music and Reflection at the Senior Carol Service

On Wednesday 10 December, the St Gabriel’s community gathered in the Sports Hall for our Senior Carol Service — an atmospheric and uplifting celebration that brought pupils, staff and families together for an evening of music, readings and seasonal reflection.

The service opened in traditional fashion with a moving solo verse of Once in Royal David’s City, creating a moment of stillness before the hall joined together in song. Much-loved carols including O Little Town of Bethlehem, The First Nowell, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and O Come All Ye Faithful followed, building to a joyous finale with Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

Scripture readings shared by pupils brought the nativity story to life with clarity and meaning, while Reverend Joy Mawdesley of St Nicholas Church delivered a thoughtful and inspiring address that encouraged the congregation to pause and consider the deeper message of Christmas.

Interwoven throughout the service were a number of standout musical performances. The Senior Vocal Group captivated with their rendition of So Many Stars, the Staff Choir delighted with Feliz Navidad, and Euphonix performed two beautifully expressive pieces. The School Orchestra provided elegant accompaniment, enriching the carols and supporting the performers with confidence and warmth.

As the service drew to a close, a retiring collection was taken in aid of two meaningful causes: Time to Talk, supporting young people’s mental health across West Berkshire, and St Nicholas Church, whose outreach work supports vulnerable local families.

This year’s Senior Carol Service was a heartfelt celebration of community, musicianship and the timeless message of Christmas. A huge thank you to all the pupils, staff and families who contributed to making the evening so special.
