St Gabriel’s Teams Shine at First LEGO League Regional Event

On Tuesday 13 January, two St Gabriel’s teams of pupils from Years 7–9 took part in the First LEGO League regional competition, held at Oxford Brookes University and organised by the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The First LEGO League is a global STEM competition designed to develop key future-ready skills including coding, engineering, teamwork and research.
Aimed at pupils aged 9–16, the challenge involves four distinct elements. The Robot Game saw teams design, build and program a LEGO robot to autonomously complete a series of missions on a specialist competition mat. These included tasks such as pulling levers to release boulders and lifting a shipwreck, with points awarded for successful completion.
The Innovation Project challenged pupils to explore this year’s theme, Unearthed. Teams researched real-world problems linked to the theme, developed creative solutions, and presented their ideas to a panel of judges.
The Core Values category focused on teamwork, inclusion, respect and innovation — the heart of what makes First LEGO League such a positive and inspiring competition — while Robot Design required pupils to explain the thinking and processes behind their robot’s construction and programming.
Our pupils have been working diligently after school throughout the academic year, collaborating, problem-solving and refining their designs. Both teams performed superbly on the day, representing St Gabriel’s with enthusiasm, professionalism and determination.
We are especially proud that one of our teams was awarded the Core Values Trophy, recognising their outstanding teamwork, creativity and sportsmanship.
Congratulations to all pupils involved for their commitment and success — a fantastic achievement for everyone who took part.
