Year 10 Experience Life in the Sixth Form During Two-Day Taster Event

On Thursday 12 and Friday 13 June, our Year 10 pupils had a fantastic opportunity to experience a full immersion into life at St Gabriel’s Sixth Form, during a vibrant and varied two-day Sixth Form Taster Event.
Far more than just sample lessons, the event offered a complete insight into the academic, social and enrichment aspects of Sixth Form life, designed to help pupils make informed choices about their future pathways.
The experience began with a warm welcome in the Scholl Library, where pupils enjoyed breakfast pastries and hot drinks before hearing from Principal Mr Smith and Head of Sixth Form Mrs Trevis. Their two-day adventure then launched into action with a high-energy team-building challenge, where pupils worked in groups to complete cryptic tasks—while never letting go of a shared piece of string!
Challenges included creating a human pyramid, solving riddles, recreating Da Vinci’s Last Supper, sketching the London skyline, and staging a selfie with every member wearing a moustache. It was a joy to see each group tackle the challenges with creativity, teamwork, and a healthy dose of competitive spirit.
Next came an introduction to the Business Diploma, available to all Sixth Form pupils, followed by a creative workshop offering a taste of the kind of innovative thinking and enterprise skills nurtured in Sixth Form.
In the afternoon, pupils rotated through a selection of A-level taster lessons, including subjects such as Drama, Classics, Sciences, Design Technology, Photography, Graphics, Textiles, Psychology, and many more. A delicious BBQ lunch, enjoyed in the comfort of the Farm House due to a deluge of rain, gave pupils time to relax and chat informally with staff and each other.
This was followed by a Q&A session with current Year 12 students, offering honest insights into the Sixth Form experience, from academic life and the Boundless Outdoors residential, to Leadership Opportunities, Peer Mentoring, Enrichment Carousel, and the Microsoft Mentoring Scheme.
The second day focused on the balance and well-being elements of Sixth Form life, with pupils rotating through an Enrichment Carousel. Sessions included Student Cooking (where pupils baked blueberry muffins), a calming Yoga and Wellbeing session led by Mrs Ferretti, and even Archery on the front lawn with Mrs Brazendale. The morning ended with a social picnic lunch on the Sixth Form lawn alongside current Year 12s, cementing new connections in a relaxed, friendly setting.
The final part of the experience offered more taster lessons, giving pupils another chance to explore subjects they were curious about or considering for further study.
The two days were a great success, full of energy, enthusiasm, and thoughtful reflection. We were delighted with how engaged Year 10 were throughout, and look forward to supporting them as they begin making those all-important decisions for their future.
