Year 1 Celebrates Michael Rosen Week with Poetry and Chocolate!

This week, Year 1’s Curious Quest lessons took a deliciously creative turn as we celebrated Michael Rosen Week with a special poetry focus.

The children were thrilled to join a live webinar with the much-loved poet himself, one of over 310,000 children nationwide tuning in to hear Michael Rosen share his poems, stories, and tips to inspire young writers.

Of course, we couldn’t resist joining in when he read his famous poem “Chocolate Cake”. To make the experience even sweeter, the children enjoyed some real chocolate cake in class—yummy!

Inspired by Michael Rosen, the children became poets themselves, crafting imaginative rhymes all about their favourite foods. From pizza to mashed potato, their creativity and wordplay were simply delicious. We loved seeing how confidently they expressed themselves through rhythm, rhyme, and humour.

A few highlights:

  • “Pizza, Ice-cream, cold and hot, Pizza, Ice-cream, mould and rot!” – Vinnie

  • “I love chocolate bars, at home I keep them in glass jars. I love chocolate bars, I’ve even sent them up to Mars.” – Grace

It was a wonderful way to celebrate words, rhythm, and imagination, and to spark a love of poetry in our youngest writers.
