Nursery Children Enjoy a Special Visit from Buttercup the Cow

On Tuesday 24 February, our Nursery children were treated to a truly memorable and hands-on learning experience, as we welcomed a very special visitor to St Gabriel’s — Buttercup the cow!

Jan from the Newbury & District Agricultural Society brought along Buttercup (a wonderfully lifelike wooden cow) to help introduce our Pre-School children to where milk comes from and how it makes its journey from farm to fridge. The children listened beautifully as Jan explained the importance of milk, how it is produced, and the role farmers play in caring for their animals.

The highlight of the session was the opportunity for each child to try milking Buttercup themselves, using a traditional stool and bucket. There was much excitement and concentration as the children practised their technique, gaining a real appreciation for the process in a fun and engaging way.

Following the Pre-School session, our Toddler group were invited to join in the fun, and many eagerly had a go at milking Buttercup too. Even some of our older babies were keen to get involved, showing curiosity and confidence as they explored this new experience.

At St Gabriel’s Nursery, we are passionate about providing meaningful, hands-on opportunities that help children connect their learning to the wider world. This special visit offered a wonderful way to bring everyday concepts to life, sparking curiosity and conversation among our youngest learners.

We are very grateful to Jan for bringing Buttercup to visit us and for creating such an enjoyable and educational morning for all of our Nursery children.
