A Joyful Afternoon of Achievement at Junior School Celebration Day

On Wednesday 2 July, the Sports Hall at St Gabriel’s was transformed into a vibrant showcase of learning, creativity and achievement as we welcomed families to our annual Junior School Celebration Day and Prize Giving.

From 1pm, parents were invited to enjoy refreshments while browsing an impressive exhibition of work from across the Junior School. The hall was filled with colourful displays highlighting pupils’ hard work and passions from throughout the year – a perfect reflection of the rich and varied learning that takes place every day at St Gabriel’s.

The formal celebrations began with two delightful pieces from the Junior Orchestra, setting the tone for an afternoon of joy and reflection. Following a warm welcome from Principal Mr Smith, the entire Junior School — from Reception to Year 6 — performed a rousing rendition of Love Shine a Light, filling the hall with music and energy.

Head of Juniors Mr Dove then addressed the audience before each year group took to the stage to share a special performance inspired by their learning this year:

  • Reception introduced us to their favourite dinosaurs and recited a charming dino-poem.

  • Year 1 showcased their topic on Bangladesh, reciting letters and singing a vibrant song celebrating the country.

  • Year 2 performed Full of Surprises, a collaboratively written poem where each child contributed a verse.

  • Year 3 wowed the audience with a dramatic and thoughtful piece titled Turn Off the Lights and See the Stars. Performed in near darkness with glow sticks and lighting effects, the piece traced the discovery of fire to modern light pollution, offering a creative and meaningful reflection on our world.

  • Year 4 shared a powerful allegorical tale about diversity and belonging, told through the metaphor of shapes learning to fit together.

  • Year 5 reflected on their favourite memories from the year – from residential trips to highlights in art, science, music and more – in a thoughtful and entertaining piece.

  • Year 6 closed the year-group presentations with a spirited performance of Under the Sea from their recent production of The Little Mermaid.

The afternoon continued with a moving finale as the whole Junior School performed The Moment by Craig McLeish, a fitting celebration of togetherness and progress.

Following the performances, the Junior School Prize Giving honoured pupils across all year groups for their outstanding contributions, effort and achievement. Cups, certificates and shields were awarded in recognition of both academic and personal accomplishments.

Outgoing Head Boy and Head Girl, Henry Cox and GG Fleetwood, delivered a heartfelt Vote of Thanks, expressing their gratitude for the opportunities and support they’ve received during their time in the Junior School. Emotions ran high as Year 6 pupils were presented with their Leavers’ Books, and Reception to Year 5 closed the afternoon with a poignant performance of the school Leavers' Song — a moment that brought more than a few tears from our Year 6 leavers.

It was a wonderful afternoon of celebration, capturing the spirit, energy and community of our Junior School. We are incredibly proud of every pupil and all that they have achieved this year, and we were delighted to share this special event with so many parents and families.
