Year 9 pupil Liam N has enjoyed an exceptional few weeks of competition, taking part in the national trials for the World Championships in Laser Run, Biathle and Triathle.
His consistency across all three disciplines has now earned him selection for each event at the Championships this October.
The first trial weekend took Liam to Blackpool for the Laser Run, which combines three rounds of precision shooting with 600m runs. Liam moved confidently through the field, taking the lead during the opening run and holding it until the final sprint, where he was narrowly edged out by a teammate. He finished 2nd overall and contributed to a team gold.
The following day he competed in a Biathle consideration event. Although not an official trial, performances can be taken into account for selection. Liam started strongly, staying with the leader into the swim before moving past him decisively and opening up a clear gap. He maintained his advantage to take the win, finishing ahead of the athlete who had topped the European Trials.
A week later, Liam travelled to Cheltenham for the official Biathle trials. A fast opening 800m run put him at the front of the race, and he continued to lead through the swim. Unfortunately, a cut to his leg as he exited the pool affected his final run, and he slipped to 3rd place, once again helping his team secure gold.
The final stage of the selection process was the Triathle trials last weekend. Despite an average opening shoot, Liam worked his way into 3rd during the first run. A challenging second shoot put him on the back foot, but a strong run moved him into 2nd and closed the gap to the leader. After another steady shoot, Liam produced an excellent swim and final run to finish 2nd, just three seconds behind the winner, and added another team gold to his tally.
Across the trials, Liam achieved two second‑place finishes and a third, securing his place on the Great Britain team for all three disciplines at the World Championships.
Verity Brazendale, Head of Curriculum PE, praised Liam's progress this season:
"We are incredibly proud of everything Liam has achieved. He is competing at both national and international level with maturity, composure and real determination. His development as an athlete this year has been remarkable - not just in performance, but in how he handles pressure and the demands of a significant training schedule. We are excited to see where his sporting journey takes him next."
This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to Liam’s determination, resilience and commitment to his sport. The whole St Gabriel’s community wishes him every success as he prepares for October.
