Year 5 Fired Up for a Visit from RBFRS

Year 5 enjoyed a brilliant start to the week on Monday 20 April as they welcomed firefighters from the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service for a morning of hands-on learning and fire safety education.
The visit began in the classroom, where the crew spoke to pupils about the vital role firefighters play in keeping communities safe. Year 5 discussed what to do in the event of a fire at home, the importance of smoke alarms, and how to make a clear and calm 999 call in an emergency. The session encouraged thoughtful questions and helped pupils understand how small actions can make a big difference to personal and household safety.
The excitement continued outside at the front of school, where pupils were thrilled to see a full operational fire engine parked for them to explore. The crew talked pupils through the different equipment stored on board, explaining how each tool is used during real emergencies. Year 5 also learnt about the importance of water supply when tackling fires and how firefighters respond quickly and effectively when a call comes in.
A highlight of the visit was the chance to see the protective uniform up close. Pupils were fascinated to learn how each piece of kit — from the helmet to the oxygen tank — helps keep firefighters safe in dangerous conditions.
Of course, no fire service visit would be complete without the moment everyone looks forward to: trying the hose! Pupils took turns directing a powerful spray of water safely across the grass — keeping well clear of pedestrians and teachers’ cars in the car park — gaining a real sense of the skill and strength involved. The crew also demonstrated the fire engine’s lights and siren, giving Year 5 a glimpse into the urgency of a real call-out.
The visit was both highly informative and hugely enjoyable, giving pupils a memorable insight into fire safety and the essential work of the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
A huge thank you to Johnny, Ryan and the team for providing such an engaging and valuable learning experience.
