Year 7 Academic Scholars Get Hands-On with Fish Dissection

Year 7 Academic Scholars took part in a fascinating biology seminar on Tuesday 20 January, gaining first-hand insight into how fish are specially adapted to extract oxygen from water.

During the session, pupils explored the structure of a salmon’s mouth, learning how water enters and flows across the gills to enable respiration. They then examined the gills in detail, carefully removing a gill arch and placing it in water to observe how it naturally fans out — just as it would in a living fish.

This practical experience brought classroom learning to life, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding of fish anatomy and the mechanics of underwater breathing. The seminar also encouraged careful observation, scientific curiosity and thoughtful discussion.

The session proved both educational and highly engaging, and it was clear that the pupils thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore biology in such a hands-on and memorable way.
