Sixth Form Politics Students Explore the Heart of UK Democracy

On Monday 1 December, our Year 12 and Year 13 Politics students set off for London to deepen their understanding of the UK’s political system with an immersive day of visits and tours across Westminster.

The group began their day at the Palace of Westminster, stepping inside one of the world’s most recognisable centres of democracy. Students had the chance to explore both the Commons and Lords, gaining first-hand insight into the processes and traditions they study in class. For Year 13, who are currently comparing UK and US governmental systems, this experience provided valuable context and revision.

The next stop was the Supreme Court, where students learnt about the court’s role in constitutional matters and its significance within the separation of powers. Seeing the courtrooms and hearing about landmark cases helped bring to life the theory they encounter in their A-level studies.

Alongside these major visits, students also enjoyed a walking tour of key political landmarks, including Downing Street, Horse Guards Parade, Banqueting House, and Whitehall. This snapshot of Westminster’s political geography offered a vivid backdrop to reflect on the workings of government, leadership, and public accountability.

The day was a fantastic opportunity for students to connect their classroom learning with real-world institutions and historical settings. Experiencing the heart of British democracy up close provided inspiration, clarity, and plenty of discussion for the journey home.
