Former MP Laura Farris Returns to Inspire at St Gabriel’s Senior Speeches & Prize Giving

St Gabriel’s celebrated its annual Senior Speeches & Prize Giving last night — a highlight of the school calendar and a wonderful occasion to recognise pupil achievement, reflect on the past year’s successes, and welcome new faces to the community.

The evening began with a warm welcome from Chair of Governors, Mr Nigel Garland, followed by a report from Principal, Mrs Ricki Smith, who reflected on the many academic, creative, and co-curricular highlights that have defined another outstanding year at St Gabriel’s.

The event also provided an opportunity to celebrate excellence across the Senior School and Sixth Form, with prizes awarded for academic distinction, effort, leadership, and service. It was a joy to welcome back many of our recent leavers, who returned to collect their awards and share in the celebrations with current pupils, staff, and families.

A particular highlight of the evening was an inspiring address from guest speaker Laura Farris, former MP for Newbury, who returned to her hometown to share her reflections on education, opportunity, and personal growth.

Farris, who grew up in the Newbury area, spoke fondly of her own school days and the formative experiences that helped shape her ambitions. She emphasised the importance of perspective — of “seeing the greater picture beyond the classroom” — and of appreciating the experiences that influence one’s path in life.

Recalling a school trip to the battlefields of Enborne, she described the profound sense of connection she felt standing on historic ground, an experience that has stayed with her ever since. Reflecting on her years in Parliament, she spoke of the awe she felt each time she walked into the Palace of Westminster:

“It’s always important to have a ‘pinch yourself’ moment. And when you stop feeling that, it’s probably time to move on. Even on my last day, I still felt it.”

Her message to pupils was one of curiosity, humility, and lifelong learning:

“When I became MP, I thought I knew all there was to know about Newbury — but I soon realised how much more there was to learn.”

She praised St Gabriel’s nurturing environment and the remarkable promise shown by its pupils, expressing her admiration for the school community and gratitude for the warm welcome she received.

The evening concluded with a beautiful performance of Climb Higher by the Senior Vocal Group, bringing a fitting sense of unity and inspiration to the occasion.

As the applause filled the Theatre, it was clear that Laura Farris’s words — and the achievements celebrated throughout the evening — had captured the spirit of ambition, reflection, and community that lies at the heart of St Gabriel’s.
