St Gabriel’s Pupils Win Top Prizes at City Arts Newbury Ceramics Competition

Two talented St Gabriel’s pupils have been recognised for their exceptional creativity at this year’s City Arts Newbury “September Ceramics” showcase, a much-loved annual celebration of pottery and ceramic art in the local community.
Now in its fifth year, the event ran from 18–28 September 2025, drawing artists, students, and enthusiasts to City Arts’ vibrant community hub to enjoy exhibitions, live demonstrations, and conversations with local ceramicists.
As part of the event, each participating artist nominated three students for the “Up and Coming” competition, which celebrates emerging talent across Primary, Secondary, and Adult categories. Entries were judged by local artist Helen Long, who also presented the prizes.
St Gabriel’s Ryan P (Year 9) was awarded First Prize in the Secondary School category for his impressive ceramic piece “Rhythm Lord”. His work stood out for its striking design and confident use of form — a fantastic achievement that reflects his creativity and technical skill.
Adding to the school’s success, Isla B (recent Year 11 leaver) won the People’s Choice Award in the Secondary category, voted for by visitors throughout the exhibition, for her beautifully crafted piece “Fairy House.”
Event organiser Isobel Carmona from City Arts commented, “It was great to have ceramics as the focus of the last two weeks". September Ceramics continues to be a wonderful way to bring people together — from professional artists to young makers — to celebrate this timeless craft.
Prizes were generously sponsored by Scarva, Blue Matchbox, The Ugly Duckling Café, and City Arts Newbury.
Congratulations to Ryan and Isla for their outstanding achievements — a testament to their creativity, dedication, and passion for the arts.
