A Fire-Fighting Adventure at St Gabriel’s Nursery

On Monday 14 July, our youngest learners had a thrilling start to the week as the Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) paid a very special visit to St Gabriel’s Nursery.
Excitement filled the Junior School playground as four local firefighters arrived in their fully equipped fire engine, ready to share their knowledge—and their kit—with eager pupils from Pre-School down to Babies.
The Pre-School children were the first to explore the fire engine up close, climbing inside the vehicle and asking plenty of curious questions. They were fascinated by the specialist protective clothing, mechanical tools, and hydraulic rescue equipment used to tackle fires and assist in emergency situations. There was particular awe at the tools used to cut through metal in order to help rescue people from confined spaces.
The highlight of the morning? A hands-on experience with the real fire hose, where the children aimed water at traffic cones acting as “mini fires”. It was an unforgettable moment for our young fire-fighting enthusiasts!
Later in the morning, the Babies and Toddlers had their turn to meet the crew and explore the fire engine. Many showed incredible bravery as they stepped aboard to sit in the cab and take in the sights and sounds of the vehicle. The flashing blue lights and final blast of the siren as the team departed left everyone wide-eyed with excitement.
A huge thank you to the RBFRS team for making the visit so memorable. The children learnt so much and were absolutely thrilled to have had this hands-on encounter with real-life heroes. We feel very lucky to have such a dedicated and inspiring fire service in our community.
What an incredible way to kick off the week!
