On Thursday 31 July, our youngest pupils in the Toddler and Pre-School rooms were treated to a very special visit from Nursery parent and St Gabriel’s peripatetic music teacher, Mr Ben Copeman.
Ben led a wonderfully engaging and interactive music session, bringing along his keyboard and a fascinating array of woodwind instruments to delight the children. From classic favourites like Baa-Baa Black Sheep to energetic renditions of Baby Shark, Ben took requests and filled the room with music and smiles.
The children were captivated by the live performances, particularly when Ben demonstrated how the pieces of a clarinet and flute fit together. Their amazement grew as he played beautiful melodies and surprised everyone with a beat-box version of the Peppa Pig theme tune on the flute!
Pre-Schoolers were especially eager to have a go on the piano, taking turns to press the keys and experiment with making their own notes. Meanwhile, our Toddlers joined in enthusiastically with the singing and showed their appreciation with cheers and applause after every song.
Musical experiences like these aren’t just fun — they play an important role in child development. Research shows that music supports early speech and language development, helps to build listening and memory skills, and contributes to emotional wellbeing. Singing, clapping and exploring instruments all help to strengthen neural connections, laying strong foundations for communication, creativity and confidence.
We are so grateful to Ben for giving up his time to share his passion and talent with our youngest learners. It was a joyful and memorable morning, and a perfect reminder of the magic that music brings to early education.
