Robotics Team Dives into Success at the FIRST Tech Challenge

On Tuesday 29 April, a group of talented and dedicated St Gabriel’s pupils from Years 8 to 11 took part in the regional round of the FIRST Tech Challenge — the world’s largest international robotics competition.

Now in its second year of participation, our team once again showcased not only their technical skills but their outstanding teamwork and sportsmanship.

The theme for this year’s challenge was ‘Into the Deep’, with tasks and matchplay inspired by ocean exploration. Since September, our team has been hard at work designing, building and programming their competition robot to take on the intricate underwater-themed challenges on the playing field.

Throughout the regional event, teams competed in a series of fast-paced matches, with alliances formed and re-formed between different schools to complete tasks, score points, and adapt strategy in real time. It was an exciting and high-energy day filled with problem-solving, innovation and collaboration.

We are delighted to share that St Gabriel’s was awarded the ‘Gracious Professionalism’ trophy — one of the most meaningful accolades of the competition. Voted for by other teams, this award recognises those who go above and beyond to support others, whether by lending equipment, offering advice, or stepping in to help during a match. The award reflects the true spirit of the competition and is a proud testament to the character and kindness of our students.

Congratulations to the entire team for their creativity, resilience, and generosity of spirit. They represented St Gabriel’s with distinction, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements both on and off the field.
