Year 7 Design Sustainable Homes of the Future

Last term, our talented Year 7 geographers immersed themselves in the fascinating topic of urbanisation, focusing particularly on the opportunities and challenges faced in urban areas in low-income countries.

Through a series of engaging lessons, pupils explored the realities of life in slum settlements and considered how housing could be improved to enhance the quality of life for those living there.

As part of an extended homework project, students were set an ambitious and imaginative task: to design and build a model of a new or redeveloped home that would be low-cost, sustainable, and suitable for ‘self-build’ or ‘community-build’ schemes. These homes needed to address real-world issues — affordability, sustainability, and a strong sense of community — while aiming to transform the living conditions in informal settlements.

In keeping with the project’s focus on sustainability, the models had to be created entirely from recycled or waste materials. Pupils rose to the challenge with creativity and care, constructing their designs using items like cardboard, yoghurt pots, straws, lolly sticks, and egg cartons. Each model was accompanied by a written explanation of the home’s key features, including how it would improve social, economic, and environmental outcomes for its residents.

Geography teacher Mrs Woods praised the students’ work, saying:
“I am so proud of the pupils — they have shown imaginative and thoughtful designs. They really engaged with the idea of a 'sense of place' not just in the homework, but throughout our lessons. They carefully thought about the need for homes that meet the needs of the people living there, so that they can thrive socially, economically, and environmentally. Well done for being the ‘geographers of the future’!”

This project not only deepened pupils’ understanding of global geography but also gave them the opportunity to think like designers, problem-solvers, and citizens of the world. A huge well done to all of Year 7 for their thoughtful, inspired work!
