Year 10 Pupils Tackle Expedition Across the South Downs

We are incredibly proud of our Year 10 pupils who successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition over the final weekend of April.

The group of six determined students spent three days and two nights hiking, navigating, and camping their way across the beautiful but challenging terrain of the South Downs, demonstrating outstanding resilience, teamwork and independence throughout.

Their expedition route took them from Old Winchester Hill in Hampshire, approximately 11 miles outside Winchester, all the way to Cocking Hill near Midhurst in West Sussex — a straight-line distance of around 18 miles, though their self-planned journey covered even more ground. The pupils were responsible for plotting their route, carrying all of their own equipment, and preparing their meals along the way.

The South Downs presented a variety of conditions — from steep ascents to open windswept ridges — but the group tackled every obstacle with perseverance and fantastic team spirit, supporting one another all the way to the finish line.

We’re delighted to share that all six pupils passed their expedition section with flying colours, a true testament to their preparation, leadership, and collaboration. As part of the Silver Award, this is a significant milestone and a great achievement that reflects their dedication to the D of E programme.

Congratulations to the team on an inspiring and successful expedition!
