St Gabriel’s was delighted to host the Newbury Schools Relay on Wednesday 20 May, welcoming approximately 140 pupils from seven schools across West Berkshire to our athletics track for an evening of energetic competition, teamwork and community spirit.
The annual event, organised by our Head of Curriculum PE and running enthusiast, Mrs Brazendale, continues to be a highlight of the local sporting calendar.
Teams from Trinity, St Bartholomew’s, Park House, The Downs, Downe House, Kennet School and St Gabriel’s took part, with pupils giving their all across an impressive 50 race events. The atmosphere on the front athletics pitch was electric, with runners showing determination, resilience and fantastic sportsmanship as they cheered one another on.
This year’s relay was proudly non‑competitive, with no overall winner. Instead, the focus was on participation, enjoyment and coming together as a community, celebrating the spirit of school sport. It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic and engaged young athletes from across our county taking part and supporting one another.
Reflecting on the event, Mrs Brazendale said: “The energy and encouragement on the track were brilliant. Every pupil who took part should feel incredibly proud of their effort and teamwork. It was a joy to see so many schools come together to celebrate running and community.”
A huge well done to all the pupils who took part — we look forward to welcoming everyone back next year.
