80th Anniversary of VE Day marked with Remembrance and Celebration

On Thursday 8 May, St Gabriel’s came together as a school community to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day — a momentous occasion commemorating the end of World War II in Europe and honouring all those who sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy today.
At midday, the entire school paused to observe a two-minute silence in solemn remembrance of those who gave their lives in the conflict. The Union Jack flew proudly above the school grounds, a visible symbol of gratitude and national pride.
Year 6 pupils commemorated the day with a very special celebration on the lawn outside the Sixth Form farmhouse. With a long table laid out beneath fluttering bunting and balloons, the atmosphere was one of joy and reflection. The children enjoyed a tea party of scones with clotted cream and jam — lovingly baked by Mrs Dye — and glasses of squash as they shared a toast to VE Day.
After their tea, the group embraced the spirit of the era with a selection of traditional party games, including hopscotch, dominoes, marbles and pick-up sticks. Laughter and chatter echoed through the garden as they played together in celebration of peace, unity and resilience.
It was a fitting and memorable way to reflect on such a significant milestone in our shared history — combining respect, remembrance and joyful celebration in true St Gabriel’s spirit.
