St Gabriel’s has today announced that it will join the Mill Hill Education Group, one of the UK’s leading charitable groups of independent schools, in a partnership designed to build on the School’s many strengths and support its continued success long into the future. This is not a commercial sale or profit‑driven transaction. It is a values‑led charitable merger that enhances opportunity, collaboration and long‑term stability.
St Gabriel’s will retain its identity, ethos and distinctive educational character as a co-educational independent day school. The School’s warm community, strong pastoral culture and individualised approach to learning will remain unchanged. Joining Mill Hill Education Group brings the additional benefits of shared expertise, wider collaboration and the long‑term resilience that comes from being part of a larger charitable organisation.
Both St Gabriel’s and Mill Hill Education Group are educational charities with closely aligned objectives. The merger is a nil‑cost charitable transaction, fundamentally different from a corporate acquisition, ensuring that St Gabriel’s continues to operate with its charitable purpose at the heart of all decision‑making. The Group operates a highly devolved model of leadership, recognising that school leaders are best placed to make decisions for their own communities.
Founded in Mill Hill in 1929, St Gabriel’s has a proud heritage. Joining Mill Hill Education Group represents a fitting reconnection with the School’s origins as it approaches its centenary in 2029.
Speaking on behalf of the Governors, Nigel Garland, Chairman of Governors, said:
“St Gabriel’s is a remarkable school — warm, ambitious and deeply committed to every individual child. As we look towards our 100th year, it feels fitting that we join a group whose origins lie in Mill Hill, where our own story began in 1929. Becoming part of the Mill Hill Education Group brings together shared values and a shared history, strengthening the foundations on which future generations will continue to thrive. It is a moment of real pride for our whole community.”
Ricki Smith, Principal of St Gabriel’s, said:
“We are delighted to announce that St Gabriel’s is joining the Mill Hill Education Group. This partnership brings together two thriving communities united by a commitment to academic excellence, exceptional pastoral care and the development of confident, well‑rounded young people. By joining the Group, St Gabriel’s will benefit from enhanced collaboration, shared expertise, and wider opportunities for both pupils and staff, while continuing to celebrate the traditions, ethos and identity that make the school so special. Together, we look forward to an exciting future defined by growth, innovation and success.”
Mill Hill Education Group has an established record of successful partnerships with schools, each of which retains its own identity and leadership while benefiting from the strength and stability of the wider group.
