Year 10 Silver Duke of Edinburgh Practice Weekend

From Friday 13 to Sunday 15 March, our Year 10 pupils headed out for their Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award practice expedition—three days that offered both the best of spring sunshine and a final reminder that the British weather always has the last word.
For much of the weekend, the groups enjoyed glorious conditions, with bright, early‑spring light transforming the West Berkshire and Hampshire countryside into an ideal backdrop for their journey. Spirits were high as pupils navigated their routes using OS maps, teamwork, and careful planning, carrying everything they needed for two nights under canvas.
Camping across the region, the pupils put their expedition skills into action: setting up camp, preparing meals, managing kit, and supporting one another through long stretches of walking. The practice weekend is designed to build confidence and independence, and it was clear to see these qualities growing as the groups made steady progress across the landscape.
Sunday brought a dramatic change in weather, with a heavy downpour marking the final leg of the expedition. Despite the soggy finish, the pupils showed real resilience, pushing through the rain and completing their routes before heading home for a well‑earned warm‑up.
This practice weekend forms an important stepping stone towards the qualifying expedition next term, giving pupils the chance to refine their navigation, organisation, and teamwork in real conditions.
A huge well done to all our Year 10 participants for their determination, positivity, and camaraderie throughout the weekend. We look forward to seeing them take on their qualifying expedition with the same spirit and confidence.
