Nursery Celebrate the Festival of Lights

Earlier this month, our Nursery children enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Diwali — the Hindu Festival of Lights. Nursery Practitioner Agila led the children in a series of special workshops, sharing the traditions and joy of this vibrant festival.

Dressed in her beautiful, colourful sari, Agila introduced the children in both the Toddler and Pre-School Rooms to the sights, sounds, and tastes of Diwali. The children had the opportunity to try on traditional costumes before getting hands-on in a special cooking session, learning how to make Indian savoury treats.

They also explored rangoli — a traditional Indian art form where intricate patterns are created using materials such as coloured sand, flower petals, or rice flour. Using bright rangoli powders in tabletop trays, the children delighted in experimenting with shapes and colours to create their own beautiful designs.

Diwali, which usually falls between October and November, is known as the Festival of Lights because homes, shops, and streets are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas. The word Diwali itself means “rows of lighted lamps,” symbolising the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

We are very grateful to Agila for sharing her knowledge and enthusiasm, and for giving our Nursery community such a colourful and memorable way to experience this special festival.
