Year 3 Explore the Wonders of the Rainforest

Year 3 pupils enjoyed a fantastic educational adventure last week as they journeyed to the Living Rainforest in Berkshire — a trip designed to bring their classroom learning to life.
Upon arrival, pupils were warmly welcomed by expert tour guides who shared a wealth of knowledge about the rainforest’s incredible biodiversity. The immersive environment offered the perfect backdrop for discovering the unique adaptations of tropical plants and animals.
A clear highlight of the visit was meeting Edwin, the charismatic Channel-billed toucan, whose colourful beak and playful behaviour captivated the whole group. Pupils were fascinated to learn that, despite its size, Edwin’s beak is surprisingly fragile — a great example of how nature favours function over strength.
The group also met Pablo, the Caiman, whose stillness demonstrated the patience of an expert ambush predator. Pupils were challenged to mimic Pablo’s composure, quickly discovering just how tricky it is to stay completely still! Their rainforest encounter continued with Dave and Woody, two Emerald Green Tree Boas, whose flexible jaws allow them to swallow prey whole — an incredible adaptation that sparked wide-eyed amazement.
This hands-on experience not only deepened pupils’ understanding of the rainforest ecosystem but also encouraged curiosity, respect for wildlife, and a sense of environmental responsibility.
The Living Rainforest proved to be the perfect classroom away from school, leaving Year 3 inspired and full of fascinating facts to share.
