Jointly organised by our Classics and Modern Foreign Languages Departments for more than a decade, the residential has become a firm favourite in the St Gabriel’s calendar, giving pupils the opportunity to put their French into practice while encountering some rather familiar faces from the ancient world!

Inspired by the much-loved Astérix stories, Parc Astérix brings the world of Roman-occupied Gaul to life, with Julius Caesar, Cleopatra and, of course, the indomitable Gauls all making an appearance. It provided a fun backdrop for pupils to make connections with their studies while immersing themselves in French language and culture.

Beautiful weather meant Year 9 could make the most of everything the park had to offer – although staying dry was rather less successful! Rollercoasters, attractions and plenty of soaking on the water rides made for a memorable day.

Beyond the thrills of the park, pupils also had opportunities to sample French food, practise their language skills and experience travelling together overseas, before squeezing in a last-minute dash around a French hypermarket to stock up on a few treats for the journey home.

As well as being great fun, the weekend offered a valuable opportunity for Year 9 to spend time together away from school, building friendships, confidence and independence through the shared experience of a residential abroad.

Our pupils were fantastic ambassadors for St Gabriel’s throughout the weekend and embraced every opportunity the trip offered.
