Year 5 Launch into Learning at Winchester Science Centre

Year 5 had an out-of-this-world start to the week with an educational visit to Winchester Science Centre, as part of their Space topic.

The day began with time to explore the Science Centre’s incredible exhibits. Pupils were fascinated by the black hole simulator, the optical illusions room, and even the opportunity to see themselves inside a real space suit.

During a hands-on workshop, the students became satellite engineers, testing which materials would work best in space using light lamps and thermometers. They then tackled a challenging laser beam activity, bouncing beams with mirrors to light up rockets—some reaching the impressive level 10! A highlight for many was putting on special glasses to split light into its component colours, bringing science vividly to life.

The Science Centre offered much more than space. Pupils enjoyed construction challenges, sound investigations (including crawling through a model ear canal!), and explored the mysteries of the deep sea.

The day concluded with a mesmerising planetarium show, taking pupils on a journey through the solar system and beyond. It was a thrilling, hands-on experience that enhanced their Space topic learning and sparked curiosity about the universe.
