Year 1 Explore Newbury

Year 1 enjoyed a wonderful day in Newbury last week, as they set out to learn more about their local area through hands‑on activities, exploration and plenty of curiosity.
The day began with a series of engaging sessions led by volunteers from the Canal & River Trust. Pupils learned important messages about water safety, including the key reminder SAFE – Stay Away From the Edge. They listened attentively and demonstrated an excellent understanding of how to keep themselves safe near water.
A highlight of the trip was a peaceful boat journey along the Kennet & Avon Canal aboard the Jubilee. Hosted by the friendly crew, the children were thrilled to travel through a lock — especially as they squeezed through alongside another canal boat. They learnt how locks work and enjoyed spotting wildlife, including a pigeon nesting in a hanging basket.
The children also took part in a creative activity exploring why canals were originally built in the local area. By making simple models, they discovered how canals once provided the quickest and straightest routes for transporting goods to towns and cities.
As they continued their walk through Newbury, the children admired the colourful mosaic outside the library, depicting scenes from the town’s history. Lunch at the West Berkshire Museum café was followed by an exciting museum trail, where pupils hunted for key artefacts in the exhibitions. Some eagle‑eyed children even spotted a very old photograph of St Gabriel’s — and recognised it as Mr Smith’s office.
It was a fabulous day filled with learning, exploration and fun. Year 1 gained a deeper understanding of their local area and, as always, represented the school beautifully.
