St Gabriel’s Hosts a Vibrant Language Olympics Celebration

St Gabriel’s was alive with energy on Thursday 6 November as we welcomed pupils from Overton CE Primary School, Stockcross Primary School, Wickham and Welford Primary School, and Burghclere Primary School to join our Year 5s for this year’s Language Olympics.

The day was themed around becoming Language Detectives, with pupils exploring how languages are formed and how meaning can be uncovered through patterns, clues and codes. From deciphering mysterious words to identifying shared roots across languages, the children embraced each challenge with impressive curiosity and teamwork.

In the afternoon, the pupils split into two language groups to learn songs and accompanying dance signs, one in French and one in Spanish. The atmosphere was joyous as they rehearsed “Le Ragga des Pingouins” and “Tierra Madre” — culminating in a lively dance-off that had everyone smiling, cheering and joining in.

A well-deserved Italian-themed pizza lunch kept energy levels high, and the day concluded with a celebration assembly, where certificates and prizes were awarded in front of proud families — accompanied, of course, by tea and cake!

The Language Olympics forms part of our wider Challenge and Extension Programme, which runs throughout the academic year in partnership with local primary schools. These events are always a highlight of our calendar, offering pupils and staff alike the chance to collaborate, learn and create together in fun and inspiring ways.

Well done to all our young linguists — we look forward to our next collaborative learning adventure!
