Four St Gabriel’s pupils delivered exceptional performances at the Biathle European Championships Qualifier 2025, held in Cheltenham on Sunday 27 April.
The event, which follows a run–swim–run format, attracted top young athletes from across the UK, all vying for a place to represent Great Britain at the European Championships in Turkey.
Representing St Gabriel’s were Matilda S (Year 5), Elodie B (Year 6), Liam N and Harriet S (Year 8). Each athlete demonstrated outstanding determination, athleticism, and resilience in their respective age groups.
Matilda S was dominant in the U11 Girls’ race, powering her way to a 1st place finish in a straight final. Matilda is now the number one-ranked U11 girl in the country and has automatically been selected for Team GB to go to the European Championships in Turkey. A truly remarkable performance from one of our youngest competitors.
Elodie B made a strong transition from the U11 category — which she won in 2024 — to the U13s, as one of the youngest in the field. Despite the step-up in age and intensity, Elodie held her own in the second-largest field of the day, with 21 competitors. Finishing in 8th place overall, she impressed with her determination and strength, and has earned one of the provisional Team GB places.
Liam N ran a strong 800m to stay just behind the leaders in his heat. Entering the 100m swim in a strong position, he maintained third place through the water. Despite a fall during the transition to the final run, Liam recovered well to finish 7th overall. The GBR team will select 8 competitors and Liam now awaits confirmation of his selection. His efforts also helped secure a Team Gold alongside his team mates finishing 7th, 8th, and 13th — an impressive group performance.
Harriet S competed in the highly competitive U15 Girls’ category, finishing 2nd in her heat to qualify for the final. She battled through an incredibly tough race and crossed the line in a brilliant 3rd place, showing grit and composure throughout. This fantastic performance has also secured her a place in Team GB for the European Championships - an amazing feat!
This is an outstanding achievement by all four of our pupils, and we are immensely proud of their performances at this prestigious event. Their efforts not only highlight their individual talents but also reflect the strength of St Gabriel’s sporting ethos, combining dedication, courage, and a supportive team spirit.
We wish them every success with the 2025 European Championships and look forward to sharing further news and developments from the group.
