Remembrance Day at St Gabriel’s

On Tuesday 11 November, the St Gabriel’s community came together to mark Armistice Day with a two-minute silence at 11.00am, reflecting on the bravery, sacrifice and service of all those who have been affected by conflict.

The silence was preceded by a moving performance of The Last Post, played beautifully on the French horn by Senior School pupil, Jack GJ, which added a poignant stillness to the occasion.

In the lead-up to Remembrance Day, Class 6S delivered an informative and thoughtful assembly exploring the significance of the poppy and why it continues to be a powerful symbol of remembrance. Using historical artefacts, personal photographs and narrative storytelling, the pupils helped the school understand the importance of honouring those who have lost their lives in war. They linked this reflection to our school’s Caring pillar of character — recognising compassion, empathy and remembrance as values that shape who we are.

The assembly also included personal stories shared by Martha, Lizzie and Mia, who spoke about members of their own families whose lives have been touched by conflict, from World War Two to Afghanistan. Their reflections reminded us that remembrance is not only historical — it is personal, present and deeply human.

As a school community, we hope that by remembering the past, we may continue to learn from it — and look towards a future guided by understanding and peace.

We will remember them.
