Celebrating World Book Day with Creativity, Costumes, and Classic Tales

On Thursday 6 March 2025, St Gabriel’s Nursery and Junior School transformed into a world of imagination as pupils and staff embraced the magic of reading for World Book Day.

With a spectacular array of costumes—from monkeys to Mr. Bump, Alice in Wonderland to Snow White and her Seven Dwarves (plus an apple!)—the school was bursting with literary characters brought to life.

Spearheaded by Head of Juniors, Mr. Pete Dove, and Year 5 teacher, Miss Jo Pritchard, the day was filled with exciting, story-inspired activities. Nursery children created World Book Day artwork and shared their favourite stories with their classmates, while Juniors kicked off the day with a special assembly featuring a costume parade. Reception to Year 2 even performed a special World Book Day song to mark the occasion.

At morning break, the Junior School Council ran an engaging scavenger hunt, challenging pupils to find hidden famous book characters around the playground. After break, Year 5 pupils buddied up with Reception and Year 1 for a heart-warming shared reading session, fostering cross-year connections and a love of storytelling.

The afternoon was packed with creative, hands-on workshops inspired by classic tales. Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 ventured into the Little Woods, where they gathered around the campfire to hear the story of The Magic Porridge Pot, enjoyed a taste of warm porridge, and took part in themed activities. These included constructing houses for The Three Little Pigs, designing traps for Hansel and Gretel, building bridges for the Three Billy Goats Gruff, and using the mud kitchen to ‘bake’ gingerbread men.

Meanwhile, Juniors rotated through eight different workshops, each designed to bring stories to life. From acting out The Magician’s Nephew in drama, to potion-making, crafting dragon eyes from clay, decorating gingerbread houses, and even caring for magical creatures, there was something for everyone. The fun continued with a 'Making Mischief' session, where pupils delighted in harmless pranks on their teachers—chocolate-covered Brussels sprouts, ‘leaks’ in the toilets (in the form of actual leeks!), and offering brownies (‘brown Es’), keeping everyone on their toes!

World Book Day is always a highlight of the Junior School calendar, and this year’s celebrations were bigger and better than ever. The day was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to explore the magic of books, celebrate their favourite stories, and be inspired to create their own. We can’t wait to do it all again next year!
