Ancient Greek Day Brings History to Life for Years 3-6

On Thursday 2 October, pupils in Years 3 to 6 stepped back in time to the 5th century BC for a special Ancient Greek Day.

The Sports Hall was transformed into bustling Athens, as children immersed themselves in a whole day of workshops, crafts and performances designed to bring this fascinating civilisation vividly to life.

The morning was spent rotating through a series of hands-on activities, from creating mosaics, pottery and sculptures to making wax tablets, silver amulets, and even experimenting with Ancient Greek-style medicine from natural ingredients. Alongside these creative sessions, pupils learned about daily life in Athens, gaining insight into the roles and experiences of different members of society — from servants and soldiers to nobility.

In the afternoon, the children worked in groups to develop performance pieces inspired by Greek myths, fables and theatre traditions. The range of creativity was impressive: there were dramatic re-enactments of Prometheus and Pandora, Agamemnon and the Cyclops, as well as retellings of classic fables such as The Tortoise and the Hare and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Song, dance and drama filled the afternoon, before the day concluded with a Greek-style banquet, where pupils enjoyed pitta bread, cheese, olives, grapes and oat biscuits — all washed down with a silver goblet of ‘wine’ (blackcurrant juice).

It was a truly memorable day, one that both pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed. The chance to dress in tunics and wraps added to the atmosphere, helping to make the experience feel authentic and immersive.

Ancient Greek Day not only deepened the children’s historical knowledge but also gave them the opportunity to explore the culture, creativity and legacy of one of history’s greatest civilisations.
