A Festival of Colour and Light at St Gabriel's Nursery

St Gabriel's Nursery was bursting with colour on Friday 6 November, as our Babies, Toddlers and Pre-School children enjoyed a wonderful day of Diwali celebrations, exploring the traditions, colours and creativity of the Festival of Lights.
Diwali, one of the most important festivals in the Hindu calendar, celebrates the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Also celebrated by Sikh and Jain communities, the festival brings families and friends together through traditions including lighting diyas (small oil lamps), decorating homes with colourful patterns, sharing food and enjoying time together. This year's main Diwali celebration falls on Sunday 8 November.
To mark the occasion, Agila, one of our wonderful Nursery team, organised a fantastic collection of hands-on activities, giving the children an opportunity to discover some of the beautiful traditions associated with the festival.
One of the highlights was creating Rangoli – intricate decorative patterns traditionally made using coloured powders, sand, rice or flower petals. The children loved experimenting with brightly coloured sands and rice to create their own designs, exploring different colours, shapes and textures as they worked.
There were also beautiful arrangements to create using fresh flower heads and petals, with the children enjoying the opportunity to arrange, combine and explore the vibrant natural materials.
Adding even more colour to the celebrations, Agila brought in a wonderful selection of traditional saris and clothing for staff and children to try on. The beautiful fabrics, intricate patterns and bright colours proved a huge hit, with plenty of excitement as the children explored the different outfits and enjoyed dressing up.
From our youngest Babies discovering new textures and colours to our Toddlers and Pre-School children enthusiastically getting involved in the creative activities, there was a lovely sense of curiosity and enjoyment throughout the Nursery.
As well as being great fun, the celebrations provided a valuable opportunity for the children to learn about different cultures and traditions through experiences they could see, touch and explore for themselves. Activities like these encourage creativity, sensory exploration and an early appreciation of the wonderfully diverse world around us.
At St Gabriel's Nursery, we love celebrating the different cultures, traditions and experiences that make our community so special. Sharing these occasions helps children develop curiosity, understanding and respect for others from their earliest years.
A huge thank you to Agila for the thought, care and creativity she put into organising such a memorable day for our Nursery children.
A wonderful celebration of colour, creativity and community – Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating!
