Bringing Maths to the Masses

Young mathematicians from local prep and primary schools enjoyed two afternoons of problem-solving at our Year 4 and Year 5 Mathematics Challenge events in January and February.

Teams of two, drawn from Year 4 and Year 5, represented their school to take part in a range of mathematical activities designed to help develop their teamwork and communication skills, as well as stimulate their interest in mathematics.

We have run the DC Beagle Maths Challenge at St Gabriel’s for many years and once again it was a great success.   It is encouraging to see the children working together and they achieved some very impressive scores, with the final results very close.

The winning teams were:

Year 4
Hungerford Primary School were victorious in the Year 4 Maths Challenge 2020
2nd Place: Bucklebury Primary School
3rd Place: Cheam School

Year 5
Great Bedwyn Primary School won the Year 5 Maths Challenge 2020
2nd Place: St Gabriel's
3rd Place: John Rankin Junior School

This was a fun way for the children to put their mathematical skills into practice; all the children immersed themselves in the afternoon’s activities and I was greatly impressed by the speed of their mental mathematics.  Our Senior School girls helped with the marking and thoroughly enjoyed supporting pupils from some of their old primary schools.
