Pupils Enjoy ‘Move Up’ Day!

On Thursday 18 June, St Gabriel’s welcomed pupils across the school to our annual ‘Move Up’ Day, a much‑loved event that gives every child the chance to experience a taster of the year ahead.

For our internal pupils, it is an opportunity to meet their new form teachers and tutors and enjoy a day designed to build confidence and excitement for September.

For those joining our Senior School in Year 7 this autumn, the day followed a specially planned programme of induction activities to help them settle in, experience senior lessons and begin forming friendships within their new year group.

The morning began with a welcome assembly before pupils moved into a carousel of lessons across English, Modern Languages, Design Technology and Science. In DT, pupils were challenged to design and engineer a car capable of protecting an egg as it travelled down a ramp and into a crash‑test wall — a brilliant introduction to creative problem‑solving and teamwork.

In Science, pupils explored the fascinating world of bubbles. From creating the largest bubble they could on their workbenches, to investigating surface tension and building bubbles within bubbles, the session was full of curiosity and laughter. They also competed to build the tallest foam tower in two minutes, tested how long a bubble could last outdoors, and watched an exciting demonstration of ignited methane bubbles.

After a busy morning, pupils enjoyed a relaxed lunch of pizza and ice cream, followed by time outside in the sunshine. Competitive volleyball and football matches took place on the lawns, while others simply enjoyed being together in the summer weather.

The day concluded with an afternoon tea and presentation for parents, offering families the chance to meet staff, ask questions and share in the excitement of the transition to Senior School.

It was a brilliant day of teamwork, energy and enthusiasm, and we are already looking forward to welcoming our new Year 7 cohort in September.
