Pre‑School Get Growing in the Nursery Gardens

Our Pre‑School children enjoyed a bright and busy morning of gardening on Thursday 4 June as they headed outdoors for a hands‑on planting session in the Nursery gardens.

We were delighted to welcome back Brendan Marchant, a former St Gabriel’s Nursery parent, who generously gave up his time once again to lead the session. Brendan brought his trademark enthusiasm — along with a LOT of compost — and guided the children through a joyful morning of planting and discovery.

This year’s activity was made even more special thanks to the support of Inghams Plant Centre, who kindly donated a vibrant selection of plants for the children to work with. Inghams, which opened in 2023 on the former Cottismore Garden Centre site, has quickly become a valued local vegetable plant nursery.

The children threw themselves into the experience with excitement — scooping compost, patting down soil and carefully planting colourful sweetcorn, French beans and bright petunias. There were muddy hands, big smiles and plenty of curiosity as they explored how plants grow and what they need to thrive.

Each child took a turn filling pots, making planting holes and gently settling in their seedlings before giving their new plants a well‑earned drink of water. Their pride was unmistakable as they admired their handiwork and chatted about how their plants might grow over the summer.

The new additions are already bringing a splash of colour to the Nursery garden, and we can’t wait to see how they flourish in the weeks ahead.

A huge thank you to Brendan Marchant for his time, expertise and generosity, and to Inghams Plant Centre for their wonderful donation. It was a memorable morning of exploration, teamwork and environmental learning for our youngest pupils.
