Year 4 Explore Edible Plants and Seed Science at Ewhurst Park

Year 4 enjoyed a fantastic Education Day at Ewhurst Park just before half term, taking part in a hands‑on programme designed to deepen their understanding of the natural world.
The children began their day in the woodland, learning how to identify a range of edible plants and discovering how these species grow and thrive in their natural habitats. Guided by the Ewhurst Park education team, they explored leaves, stems and scents, building confidence in recognising plants safely and responsibly.
They then moved on to a fascinating session on seed identification, examining different shapes, textures and dispersal methods. Pupils were encouraged to think like young botanists, comparing seeds and discussing how each one is adapted to its environment.
A highlight of the day was the chance to plant their own seeds to take home. With plenty of enthusiasm (and a little soil under their nails), the children carefully prepared their pots and labelled their seedlings, eager to watch them grow over the coming weeks.
The visit offered a brilliant blend of outdoor learning, scientific discovery and environmental awareness — a memorable experience that brought classroom learning to life.
