St Gabriel’s Debating Teams Take on Oxford Union Schools’ Competition

On Tuesday 4th February, a group of Senior and Sixth Form pupils from St Gabriel’s took part in the Oxford Union Schools’ Debating Competition, hosted at Oxford High School.
We entered four teams, each comprising two pupils, to compete against a wide range of schools including Cheney School, Abingdon, Aylesbury Grammar, Greyfriars, St Helens and St Katherine’s, Downe House, Berkhamsted, Oxford High, and many more.
The first round debated the motion: “This House Would Ban media outlets from reporting on the personal lives of politicians.” In the second round, teams argued “This House Believes that the punishment for an attempted crime should be equal to the punishment for a committed crime.” All speeches were delivered in a parliamentary style, with each speaker presenting for five minutes. Pupils had the chance to argue for and against each motion, honing their critical thinking, persuasive skills, and teamwork.
While our teams did not progress to the Finals Day, competing against many Year 13 teams, they gained valuable experience and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. The event was an excellent opportunity to develop confidence in public speaking and debate, and to engage with students from across the region.
St Gabriel’s Senior Debating Club meets on Wednesday lunchtimes in the Farmhouse, while the Junior Debating Club meets on Tuesdays from 4–5pm in the School Library. Pupils of all ages are welcome to join and develop their skills in a supportive and engaging environment.
