Part of our Challenge and Extension Programme, this much-loved event aims to inspire a love of mathematics while offering pupils the opportunity to tackle engaging and thought-provoking challenges in a fun, competitive setting. This year, we were pleased to welcome 19 schools, each represented by a team of four pupils.

The challenge was expertly led by Alison Hopper from Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) — an educational charity dedicated to transforming lives through maths education. Pupils worked collaboratively to solve a series of demanding and enjoyable mathematical problems. Each correct answer earned teams a new segment of their caterpillar, with the overall goal of building the longest caterpillar possible by the end of the competition.

After some impressive mathematical reasoning and excellent teamwork from all involved, Overton CofE Primary School emerged as the winners, with Horris Hill close behind as runners-up. Congratulations to both teams, and to all the pupils who took part and rose so enthusiastically to the challenge.

Parents were invited to join us for a special afternoon tea ahead of the prize giving, providing a lovely opportunity to celebrate the pupils’ achievements together.

At St Gabriel’s, we place great importance on mathematics as a core life skill and take pride in creating opportunities that stretch, challenge and inspire young learners. Events such as the Year 4 Maths Challenge also reflect our commitment to working collaboratively with local schools, sharing expertise and fostering a wider community of learning.
