Year 1 Science: A Blooming Great Time in the Garden

This term, Year 1 pupils are diving into the world of plants in their Science lessons — and what better way to learn than by taking the classroom outside?
Making full use of our wonderful Year 1 Garden, the class enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon exploring nature through a carousel of hands-on activities. Pupils had the chance to identify and sort the different parts of a flowering plant, reinforcing key scientific knowledge while interacting with real-life examples in their outdoor surroundings.
Inspired by the beautifully illustrated book The Visitors, which showcases art made from natural materials, the children also created their own flower and leaf-based artwork. Using petals, twigs, leaves and other found objects, they produced imaginative and thoughtful nature pictures that reflected both their creativity and their growing understanding of the natural world.
The experience didn’t stop there — the garden itself became a hub of cross-curricular play and learning. Pupils took turns watering the plants, experimenting with creating a mini-waterfall, and even designing their own seasonal specials for the mud kitchen menu!
This immersive session offered a brilliant example of cross-curricular learning in action, blending Science, Art, and imaginative play — all in the great outdoors. A blooming brilliant time was had by all!
