St Gabriel’s

The Sound of Scotland Comes to St Gabriel's Nursery!

There was a rather unusual sound drifting across the gardens of St Gabriel's Nursery on Friday 6 November, as our youngest children enjoyed a very special musical visit from one of our Nursery parents!

Mr Childs, whose child attends our Toddler Room, kindly brought along his bagpipes to introduce the children to the distinctive sounds and traditions of Scottish music.

With the bagpipes producing a rather impressive volume, Mr Childs performed from the Nursery garden, treating our Babies, Toddlers and Pre-School children to a selection of traditional Highland tunes from the comfort of their free-flow playground spaces.

The children were fascinated by the unfamiliar sounds, listening with curiosity and excitement as the music filled the air. Afterwards, they had the opportunity to see the bagpipes up close, exploring the unusual instrument and discovering more about how it works.

Mr Childs also shared a little of his own story. Growing up in the Scottish Highlands, he attended a school where all the boys were taught to play the bagpipes, while the girls learnt the violin. It's a musical tradition he has continued to enjoy ever since, and his impressive playing was a real treat for our Nursery community.

Experiences like these are a wonderful way to introduce young children to different musical instruments, sounds and cultural traditions. They encourage curiosity, listening and exploration, while helping children discover the many talents and experiences within their own community.

At St Gabriel's Nursery, we love welcoming parents and family members to share their skills, interests and cultural traditions with our children. Whether it's music, cooking, storytelling, crafts or something entirely different, these visits bring a special richness to Nursery life and help strengthen the connections between home and school.

Could you share something special with our Nursery children?

If you're a St Gabriel's Nursery parent and have a skill, talent, interest or cultural experience you'd love to share, we'd be delighted to hear from you! Whether it's playing an instrument, sharing a favourite recipe, reading a story or introducing the children to something completely new, please get in touch with our Nursery Manager, Katie Noonan, to find out how you could get involved.

A huge thank you to Mr Childs for taking the time to share his wonderful musical talent with us. It was a memorable experience for children and staff alike, and a lovely reminder of just how much our Nursery families have to offer.

A little taste of the Highlands, right here in the heart of Berkshire!
