A World of Curiosity: Year 7 Bring Stories to Life in Play in a Day

What can you create in just one day? For our Year 7 pupils, the answer was an entire theatrical production, written, rehearsed and performed for an audience of proud parents!
On Tuesday 3 November, Year 7 rose to the challenge of our annual Play in a Day, a much-loved St Gabriel's tradition led by Head of Drama, Mrs Ruth Chaplin.
This year's theme, 'A World of Curiosity', invited pupils to explore the extraordinary possibilities that lie behind seemingly ordinary things, drawing inspiration from the magic of storytelling and the power of imagination.
Inspired by the novel Over Sea, Under Stone, the production followed a group of children exploring the attic of an old house, where a collection of mysterious objects opened the door to a series of imaginative adventures.
As the play's atmospheric opening narration reminded the audience:
"In every quiet room, in every quiet corner, in every ordinary object, there is a door... Curiosity is the key that turns the handle."
Each group of pupils created paired scenes, revealing both the history of a mysterious attic treasure and the reactions of the children who discovered it. Every story ended on a cliffhanger, leaving the audience wondering what might happen next and inviting them to use their own imaginations to continue the adventure.
Linked through drama, dance and music, the different stories came together to create a magical world of mystery, possibility and discovery.
Pupils had begun exploring ideas during their Drama lessons towards the end of the previous half term, but the real challenge began on Tuesday morning. Working together, they had just one school day to transform those initial ideas into a complete theatrical production.
It was all hands on deck as Year 7 developed their scripts, brought characters and scenes to life, coordinated the different elements of the production and rehearsed against the clock.
With so much to achieve in such a short space of time, the project demanded creativity, communication, flexibility and, above all, teamwork. Pupils had to listen to one another, share ideas, make decisions and support their fellow performers as their production gradually took shape.
That evening, families were welcomed into the Theatre to see the results of their hard work.
And what a performance it was! Despite the ambitious timescale, Year 7 delivered a fantastic production, demonstrating impressive confidence, courage and imagination on stage.
Beyond the excitement of the performance itself, Play in a Day offers a valuable opportunity for pupils to step outside their comfort zones, discover new strengths and experience what can be achieved when everyone works towards a shared goal.
For pupils still in their first term of Senior School, it was particularly rewarding to see how confidently they embraced the challenge, supported one another and brought their collective ideas to life.
A huge congratulations to all our Year 7 pupils on a wonderful achievement, and thank you to Mrs Chaplin for inspiring and guiding them through this ambitious creative adventure.
As the production so beautifully put it:
"Stories aren't just read, they're entered."
And for one memorable day, Year 7 did just that.
