New Adventures and Growing Friendships for Year 7 at Avon Tyrrell

Year 7 headed into the beautiful New Forest over the weekend of 10–11 October for their much-anticipated residential at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Centre – a fantastic opportunity to embrace new challenges, strengthen friendships and enjoy a little adventure beyond the classroom.
Just a few weeks into their Senior School journey, the trip offered pupils the chance to spend time together in a completely different environment, getting to know one another better while developing their confidence, independence and teamwork.
Set within the grounds of Avon Tyrrell's historic estate, the weekend was packed with outdoor activities designed to encourage pupils to challenge themselves and work together. From taking aim in archery and tackling the high ropes to zip lines, tree climbing and bushcraft, there were plenty of opportunities to try something new, overcome a few nerves and discover hidden strengths.
Teamwork was put to the test through navigation challenges, with pupils working together to find their way around the grounds. Whether following coordinates during geocaching adventure or putting their map-reading skills into practice through orienteering, communication and collaboration were key to success.
Away from the activities, there was plenty of time to relax, recharge and enjoy being together. From games of pool and table football in the main house to shared meals, football, frisbee and plenty of laughter, some of the most memorable moments came simply from spending time with new friends.
Throughout the weekend, pupils encouraged one another, celebrated each other's achievements and embraced the challenges that came their way. Whether stepping outside their comfort zones, helping a teammate or having a go at something they had never tried before, it was wonderful to see their growing confidence and team spirit.
The Avon Tyrrell residential is always a special milestone in the Year 7 calendar. More than simply a weekend of outdoor adventure, it provides an opportunity for friendships to flourish, new experiences to be shared and pupils to feel increasingly at home as part of the St Gabriel’s Senior School community.
What a brilliant way to begin their Year 7 journey – and what wonderful memories to bring home!
