Year 7 Bring History to Life at Windsor Castle

Year 7 stepped out of the classroom and into nearly 1,000 years of history on Monday 5 October, with a visit to Windsor Castle as part of their study of the Norman Conquest.

With their History lessons exploring the dramatic events of 1066 and the impact of William the Conqueror’s victory, the trip gave pupils the opportunity to see first-hand one of the most enduring legacies of Norman rule in England.

A highlight of the day was the interactive “1066: What Happened Next?” workshop. Pupils travelled back to the turbulent period following the Battle of Hastings, exploring the challenges William faced as he sought to establish and maintain control over his newly conquered kingdom.

Through discussion and interactive activities, Year 7 considered the decisions facing England’s new king and explored how castles became powerful symbols of Norman authority. Experiencing these ideas within the surroundings of Windsor Castle helped pupils make connections between what they have been studying in the classroom and the history that remains around us today.

There was also time to explore the Castle itself and take in the scale and splendour of a site that has played a remarkable role in British history for almost a millennium.

Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, Windsor provided a particularly fitting setting in which to consider how the events of 1066 reshaped England. Rather than encountering the Norman Conquest solely through textbooks and classroom discussion, pupils were able to stand within a place whose own story began as part of that transformation.

The visit was a fantastic opportunity for Year 7 to deepen their understanding of their History topic while enjoying a memorable day together beyond the classroom.

A brilliant way to see almost 1,000 years of history brought to life!
