Year 6 Enjoy High‑Energy Skateboarding Session with Newbury Skate School

Year 6 pupils had an unforgettable afternoon on Thursday 7 May when Ashli Young and his team from Newbury Skate School visited St Gabriel’s for a special taster session.

Founded in 2025, Newbury Skate School has quickly become Berkshire’s premier destination for learning to skate, offering personalised coaching that blends skill‑building, confidence and plenty of fun.

Ashli began the session by introducing pupils to the fundamentals of skateboarding — starting with identifying whether they were goofy or regular riders, before practising the balance and stance needed to feel secure on the board. Once they’d found their footing, pupils took turns navigating a mini-course through the Junior playground, working on posture, steering and using their weight to control the board.

The final challenge was the much‑anticipated limbo pole, where pupils tested their balance and bravery by ducking under the bar while rolling on their boards. Confidence levels varied — some pupils launched themselves into the challenge with enthusiasm, while others approached more cautiously — but every child gave it a go and came away smiling. There were definitely a few natural skaters in the mix, keen to keep developing their new skills.

A huge thank you to Ashli and his team for delivering such an energetic and inspiring session. Our second Year 6 class is already looking forward to their turn next week — and judging by the number of Junior and Senior pupils watching from the sidelines, they won’t be the only ones eager to give skateboarding a try.
