St Gabriel's Pupil Sophie Triumphs at the World Martial Arts Championships

St Gabriel’s is celebrating the outstanding success of Year 4 pupil, Sophie, who represented Team England at the 2025 World Martial Arts Championships, held at the University of Hull from 18–20 September.

Competing as one of the youngest martial artists in her categories, Sophie showed remarkable skill, resilience, and determination on the international stage. She captured the attention of the judges and spectators alike with a series of stunning performances. She secured gold in points fighting, holding her nerve in a thrilling final to win 7–6. In the colour belt Kata section, Sophie once again impressed, delivering a beautiful routine that earned her another gold medal, despite still being a green belt.

Her success did not stop there. Invited to step up into the black belt Kata division against far more experienced opponents, Sophie astonished the audience by defeating German, US, and Czech national champions before narrowly missing out on gold by just 0.04 points, taking home a remarkable silver medal. In her final event, the Kumite, Sophie faced the German National Champion in what proved to be a close and hard-fought contest. Despite only recently beginning training in this discipline, she demonstrated great courage and skill, ultimately claiming another silver medal for England.

Reflecting on the championships, Sophie’s father Mathew, said:

“We are incredibly proud. Sophie has worked so hard and shown such courage. She has had her share of losses too, but every setback has helped her learn and grow. This success is the result of her determination, the support of her teammates, and the dedication of the amazing volunteer instructors at Nemesis Martial Arts.”

Sophie’s martial arts journey began at the age of five under Sensei Peter Felix at Nemesis Martial Arts in Reading. Inspired by watching older peers compete, she committed herself to intensive training and quickly rose through the competition levels. Her triumph in Hull, while representing England, marks her best performance yet and establishes her as one of the most exciting young martial artists in her age group.

Peter Dove, Head of St Gabriel’s Juniors added:

“Sophie’s achievements at the World Championships are truly inspirational. Her perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication reflect the values we celebrate as a school. She is a credit to St Gabriel’s and a role model for her peers.”

Sophie’s next challenge will be the WAKO Bristol Open in October, after which she will take a short break to reflect on a hugely successful year before preparing for the next stage of her martial arts journey.
