Greenpower Team Races into Action at Goodwood

On Sunday 27 April, St Gabriel’s Greenpower team made an exciting trip to the historic Goodwood Motor Circuit to compete in the IET Greenpower South of England F24 Race Day.
Our team of 20 students, spanning Year 7 to Year 12, embraced the challenge and spirit of sustainable engineering and motorsport.
The Greenpower competition sees students design, build, and race electric cars, with the goal of covering the furthest distance in a 90-minute race using just one set of batteries. In a highly competitive field of 68 entries for the F24 class, our students represented St Gabriel’s with energy, determination, and a fantastic team spirit.
In the first race of the day, our car Dame Betty successfully crossed the finish line with an impressive 18th place in class. In Race 2, both of our cars hit the track, with St Gabs finishing 25th in class and Dame Betty placing 29th. Every student who attended had the opportunity to drive, making it a thrilling and memorable experience, particularly for those encountering motorsport for the first time.
Beyond racing, our teams also took the opportunity to learn from their competitors. They spent time studying other teams' cars and speaking to participants about ways to improve aerodynamics, maximise battery efficiency, and better manage motor cooling — all valuable insights for future races.
The team managers did a superb job organising our race day logistics and keeping the team running smoothly throughout the event. Their leadership and coordination helped make the day a fantastic success.
We are immensely proud of all the students for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and resilience on race day. With new ideas and inspiration gathered from Goodwood, the Greenpower team is already looking ahead to making improvements to Dame Betty and St Gabs — and we can't wait to see what the next event brings!
