Year 6 Create Inspiring ‘Mini Museums’ in Their Study of Australia

It has been almost impossible to choose a single highlight from Year 6’s study of Australia this term. The topic has opened up a world of striking landscapes, unique wildlife and fascinating human stories, and the children have thrown themselves into every aspect of their learning.
Along the way, they have strengthened their location knowledge, deepened their understanding of physical and human geography, and developed impressive map‑reading and enquiry skills.
Exploring Australia’s Indigenous and Invasive Species
In recent weeks, the focus has turned to Australia’s animal species—both indigenous (native to the country) and invasive (introduced from elsewhere). Pupils explored how invasive species have affected Australia’s delicate ecosystems, and last week they were set a creative challenge: to design and present their own “table‑top mini museum” on an invasive species of their choice.
With so many species to choose from, it was a delight to see that every group selected something different. Their museums featured feral goats, wild cats, deer, pigs and fire ants!
Each group was free to choose the exhibits they felt would bring their species to life—models, quizzes, slideshows, fact books and more. The results were extraordinary.
Creativity and Curiosity on Display
The classroom was transformed into a vibrant exhibition space filled with imagination and meticulous research. Highlights included: Hetty’s model feral goat, a wonderfully detailed creation that immediately caught the eye; Reuben’s spotty feral cat, crafted with flair and personality; Darcy’s huge bronze feral deer, an impressive centrepiece; Jennifer’s feral pig cupcakes, which added a delicious twist to the learning; and Mia’s Blooket quiz, which kept everyone entertained and informed.
Beautifully designed posters, carefully drawn distribution maps and well‑researched fact sheets completed each display. As Louisa put it, the project felt “so different and creative – and there were cakes!”
A Memorable Year 6 Initiative
This Year 6 initiative has been a wonderful blend of geography, creativity and independent enquiry. The pupils not only developed a deeper understanding of Australia’s wildlife and environmental challenges, but also showcased teamwork, imagination and a real enthusiasm for learning.
Their “mini museums” were a joy to explore and a testament to the curiosity and creativity that define Year 6.
