Year 5 Step Back in Time at Reading Museum

On Monday 23 March, Year 5 pupils enjoyed an exciting and immersive trip to Reading Museum, where they stepped back in time to experience life as a Victorian schoolchild.
The morning began in a mock Victorian classroom, where pupils fully embraced the experience by dressing in traditional clothing from the period. They quickly discovered that school life in Victorian times was very different from today! Sitting in silence with straight backs and arms firmly behind them, the children took part in a series of authentic lessons. These included reciting times tables, completing maths exercises and practising neat handwriting using ink pots and dip pens.
The session also gave pupils a fascinating insight into the strict discipline of the era. They learnt about the punishments children might face for misbehaviour, including the infamous dunce cap and even the cane—an eye-opening contrast to modern classroom life.
Later in the day, pupils explored the world beyond the classroom in a session focused on Victorian jobs. They discovered the types of work children were often expected to do and enthusiastically stepped into role as a variety of workers, including chambermaids, footmen, chimney sweeps and gardeners.
The trip provided a memorable and hands-on way to bring their history learning to life, giving pupils a deeper understanding of the challenges and experiences of children in Victorian Britain.
