Year 6 Step Back in Time to Explore the Story of the Titanic

Year 6 travelled to Southampton on Friday 9 October for a fascinating visit to the SeaCity Museum, where they explored the story of the RMS Titanic and discovered more about one of the most significant maritime disasters in history.

The trip formed part of the pupils’ History studies, providing a wonderful opportunity to bring their learning to life through historical artefacts, interactive exhibits and hands-on activities.

At the heart of the visit was the museum’s Southampton’s Titanic Story exhibition, which explores the ship’s ill-fated maiden voyage in April 1912 and the enormous impact of the tragedy on the city of Southampton, where so many of the crew lived and worked.

Through a guided tour, pupils discovered more about life aboard the Titanic, from the experiences of its passengers and crew to the sequence of events that led to its sinking. The exhibition’s fascinating collection of artefacts, personal stories and interactive displays helped Year 6 gain a deeper understanding of both the ship itself and the people whose lives were affected by the disaster.

A particular highlight was a specialist workshop, where pupils had the opportunity to handle artefacts representing objects that would have been found aboard the Titanic. They explored the circumstances surrounding the sinking, considered the difficult decisions faced during the evacuation and discussed how passengers were prioritised for places in the lifeboats.

There was also an opportunity to put their communication skills to the test by deciphering Morse code, discovering more about how messages were transmitted at sea before the age of modern technology.

The learning wasn't all serious, however! Pupils also enjoyed trying on period costumes, stepping into the roles of passengers and crew, and even learning the correct salutes used by sailors.

Throughout the day, Year 6 were encouraged to look beyond the familiar story of the Titanic and consider the human experiences behind the historical events, developing their understanding of life in the early 20th century and the lasting impact of the tragedy.

It was a memorable day of discovery, reflection and hands-on learning, bringing an important chapter of history vividly to life beyond the classroom.
